How to treat a Boil?
82You’ve a red, swollen, bumpy skin that emerges larger each passing day. You’ve noticed that something that is painful and yellowish is forming in the center. Oh no that might be a boil!
Boil also known as Furuncle is a skin disease caused by the infection of hair follicles, resulting in the formation of pus and dead tissue in a limited small area. Pus is a whitish-yellow, yellow or yellow-brown fluid that emits during draining. Individual boils can cluster together and may form as a carbuncle. It is larger than a boil, usually with one or more openings. Boil may set in any part of the body but mostly to the hidden parts such as armpits, buttocks, upper thighs, stomach and back.
Indications of a boil:
- Itching in the infected area.
- Reddening of the skin.
- Swelling.
- Infected area is getting more painful each day.
- Yellow or white spot in the center.
- Some have a foul odor.
- Yellow and red substance also known as pus will drip as it erupts.
- Fever may take place if multiple boils build up.
Skin Plug
Causes of boil:
You might think; am I lacking a good hygiene? Why did a boil hit me?
- The most common cause would be a plugged sweat gland that becomes infected.
- Ingrown hair.
- Skin breakage due to cuts or scrapes.
- And yes poor hygiene may be a reason for having one too.
What will I do? Can I do some self medication?
A skin boil may heal by itself. It usually stays and clears up for as short as 4 days and as long as 15 days.
Home Treatment:
- Do hot compress on the affected areas to lessen the pain.
- Have some quick hot bath; it will help skin boil to open up and drain.
- To lessen the pain, you may take some over-the-counter pain medication such as “mefenamic acid”.
- Wash your hand thoroughly after you have just treated your boil.
- Do not let the pus spread to the other areas of your skin; you might have another infection that may cause another boil.
- Cover it with a bandage or gauze to prevent further infection especially if it is already draining.
- Take some vitamin C to speed up the healing process.
- Antibiotic may help but would be best if prescribed by your doctor.
- Apply tea tree oil as it is known as an antibacterial medicine.
- Applying “drawing salve” or “black ointment” may accelerate the maturing process that will shorten the settlement of the boil.
How can I prevent having boils?
- Use antibacterial soap to prevent bacteria from building up.
- Use of abrasive brush will help break up oil that plugs in your pores.
Another safe and effective way to prevent or treat a boil is using BoilX
BoilX is a liquid oral spray designed to be absorbed into the blood vessels under the tongue, bypassing the digestive tract, which may slow the absorption of orally administered products. BoilX can be safely used with other medications with no drowsiness or adverse side effects. Using BoilX as early as you have suspected a boil coming may heal the boil in the earliest time and in the easiest possible way.
*** If home remedies may not be enough, especially if you have developed carbuncles; you should ask for your Dermatologist’s prescription.

This is very educative. Thank you.
Thanks for the clear, informative hub. As a mom, it's useful to know these facts, because you never know what life can throw at you.
Furuncle, carbuncle--why you can even rhyme your way into this hub on Boil.
You're right, everything is we need to know is a touch of the keyboard away and your valuable information serves to prove the point.
Home remedies are better to follow. The points shared by you are really useful. As madurai said, Turmeric is also a simple and most effective method.
I hope it works. Unfortunately i got one from dirty toilet seats. Its so gross. I tried to put antibiotic (the powder one inside the capsule) after i drain it. And i really hope it heals soon.
I have come across another effective home treatment-apply honey on the boil, lessens the pain associated with it and also aids in breaking of the boil. This when tried, was effective.
Had I read your very informative hub, I could have saved myself a trip to the docs office and try some of the remedies you provided. Then I could be writing about the effectiveness of tea tree oil or black ointment.
Great hub!
